When it comes to note taking… well lets just say that I am no expert! My notes normally consist of a mixture of scribbling down what my professor says and the bullets on the power point slides that are shown. But this week I took a different approach to my note taking skills.
For my earth sciences class I tried two different styles of note taking. The first one being the plug in. For this strategy I decided again skipping a few lines in between the main points because I noticed that my notes normally never go margin to margin therefore I was able to plug graphic organizers and draw pictures to help me understand the information when I went back to review it! I highlighted my plug ins to make them stand out (and because I love the bright colors!) I left the last couple of lines on each page of my notes free. This way I was able to go back and make up questions that may be on my next exam. After creating the questions I went back and answered them the next day! Ido think that this technique was useful, but I’m not sure I was really all that fond of it… This leads me to the next strategy I tried the next day I had earth sciences, the one plus three note taking method! For this strategy I took notes on only the
left side of my notebook leaving the right side blank. After class I divided up the right side into three different sections. One being key terms that appeared in my notes, the second being a space to make a graphic organizer, and the third being test questions that I think may possibly appear on my next exam. I really liked this strategy because now when I go back to study for the exam the key terms will stand right out for me making the studying process that much easier (this is the part that really sold me on this strategy)! Also the graphic organizer provides another study tool for me. As well as having more test questions that my possibly appear!! I definitely plan on continuing to use this strategy in my earth science class. At the end of this unit when I go to make a study guide I will be able to go through and pull out all the key terms without having to search for them as well as answer the questions I created! This will be a good way to evaluate that I understand what I am studying and it will be a major definite time saver!
I totally agree with you on how helpful the "1 Plus 3 Notes" were! Like you said, writing out the key terms is such a great strategy when it comes time to study for a test. Also, i dont know if you have started your exam experiment project yet, but i realized that the graphic organizers and test questions i created for this note taking strategy can actually double for our project!! Definitely handy during a high-stress time like midterms.
ReplyDeleteHow come you didn't love the "Plug In Notes"? I found them helpful, but i did enjoy the "1 Plus 3" a lot more too.
Seeing your 1 plus 3 notes made me see that I don't physically need to draw a box on my page like how I did it...yours looks so neat and organized. I agree that the graphic organizer makes it so much easier to study, its helped me a lot with my economics class!
